GSM (grams per square meter) is one of the most common specifications buyers reference, but it\’s often misunderstood. Here\’s what it actually tells you — and what it doesn\’t.
What GSM Measures
GSM measures fabric density, which relates to how much a towel weighs relative to its surface area. Higher GSM generally means a thicker, more absorbent towel, but it also means higher material cost and longer drying time.
Typical GSM Ranges by Use Case
- 300–400 GSM: lightweight, quick-drying — suited to gyms, beach towels, and budget hospitality programs
- 400–550 GSM: the standard range for mid-tier and upscale hotel towels
- 550–700 GSM: luxury spa and five-star hotel towels, plush handfeel
GSM Is Not the Whole Story
Cotton quality, yarn twist, and terry loop density all affect handfeel and durability independent of GSM. A well-constructed 400 GSM towel can outperform a poorly made 500 GSM towel after repeated washing.
