A golf towel is a small product with a surprisingly large number of purchasing decisions. Size, fabric, loop or clip construction, logo method, color, folding, retail packing and tournament delivery all affect the finished result. When these points are not fixed at quotation stage, buyers often receive prices that cannot be compared or samples that do not match the intended program.
This guide is written for golf brands, distributors, pro shops, tournament organizers, promotional companies and private-label buyers. It follows the sourcing sequence from use case to shipment, with emphasis on the decisions that influence quotation accuracy and repeat-order control.
1. Define where the golf towel will be used
A towel clipped to a golf bag has different requirements from a folded retail accessory or a tournament gift. State the primary use before selecting a construction. A bag towel may require a reinforced eyelet and attachment. A caddie towel may be larger and may use a center slit or loop. A retail set may need coordinated packaging with tees, balls or accessories. A club event towel may prioritize sponsor visibility and a fixed delivery date.

The same reference image may be interpreted in several ways. A short use statement prevents the supplier from quoting the wrong product route.
2. Select material according to cleaning, branding and presentation
Cotton terry is frequently selected for a familiar towel hand and looped cleaning surface. Cotton velour can provide a smoother face for certain presentation or decoration requirements while retaining a different reverse construction. Microfiber may be selected for compact programs, cleaning performance or specific printed designs. Recycled polyester can be considered when the program requires verified recycled content and the supplier can provide the relevant order-level documentation.
Do not use a material label as a complete specification. Ask for fiber composition, construction, finished size, GSM or piece weight, edge treatment and decoration compatibility. A microfiber waffle, microfiber terry and microfiber suede are not interchangeable. Cotton terry density and loop height can also change the hand and cleaning surface at the same nominal GSM.
3. Set size by hanging function and logo area
Finished dimensions should be chosen with the attachment position and fold in mind. A long towel may hang attractively but contact the ground when attached to a low point. A compact towel may fit a gift set but provide limited cleaning area. Ask for a paper mock-up or measured stock sample before authorizing custom production.
State whether the quoted dimensions include decorative borders, fringe or binding. Add separate tolerances for length and width. If a grommet is placed in a corner, define the center-to-edge distance and reinforcement. If the towel uses a center slit, specify slit length, opening finish and orientation relative to the logo.

4. Treat GSM and piece weight as control values
GSM provides a weight reference per square metre, while actual piece weight helps with packing and freight planning. Neither should be used alone as a quality claim. Yarn, pile, knitting or weaving structure, finishing and size all influence the result. Compare quotations only when suppliers are pricing the same construction and finished dimensions.
For a golf bag program, the buyer may prefer a balance between wiping surface and hanging weight. For premium retail, a more substantial hand may support the price position. Define a target and tolerance, then confirm how the supplier measures finished products. Retain the approved sample for bulk comparison.
5. Specify the clip, grommet and reinforcement
Attachment hardware is a functional component, not a minor accessory. Identify the clip material, color, opening method and finished dimensions. Confirm whether a swivel function is required. For metal hardware, ask about surface finish and corrosion-related expectations in the intended environment. For plastic hardware, review strength and appearance on a physical sample.
The grommet or eyelet should be specified by inner diameter, outer appearance, finish and placement. Ask how the surrounding fabric is reinforced. Pull testing or a practical attachment test may be included when failure would create a commercial risk. If the clip is supplied loose rather than pre-attached, define packing and assembly responsibility.
6. Choose decoration based on artwork and towel surface
Embroidery is common for club, sponsor and brand logos, but dense stitches can compress the towel and create a stiff area. Provide vector artwork, exact finished size, thread color references and placement measurements. Approve backing, stitch density and the reverse appearance. Small lettering may need simplification.
Jacquard weaving can integrate a repeated or tonal identity into the towel construction. It requires artwork adapted to the weave and a clear decision about the primary face. Screen printing, transfer or sublimation may be considered for suitable base materials and graphics. Sublimation requires a polyester-compatible printing surface. Each method changes minimum quantity, setup, hand feel and color control.
For multi-sponsor tournaments, create an artwork map that fixes logo order, size and clear space. Do not approve only a screen image. Request an actual-size print, embroidery strike-off or woven sample, then sign the final version used for production.
7. Control base color and logo contrast
Provide a recognized color reference for the towel and separate references for embroidery thread, print and accessories. A monitor image is not a production standard. Use a lab dip, yarn sample or decorated sample appropriate to the manufacturing route.
Dark towel colors can show lint, dust or light thread differently from pale colors. Light sponsor marks on dark grounds should be reviewed for visibility and possible color transfer under the intended care method. For assorted event colors, define the exact quantity per color and whether shade grouping within cartons is allowed.
8. Develop packaging around the sales or distribution process
A pro-shop towel may require a hook-ready hangtag, barcode, retail price label and brand story. A tournament towel may need individual bags, player names, team sorting or sponsor inserts. A gift set may require a tray, sleeve, pouch or box shared with other accessories. Confirm whether the towel is packed open, folded, rolled or attached to the clip.
Provide final label text, fiber declaration, care instructions, country-of-origin wording, barcode format and carton marks. Packaging approval should include a physical sample or dimensioned layout. A towel can be technically correct and still miss a campaign date because the barcode, spelling or pack dimensions were approved too late.
9. Build the tournament schedule backward from the event date
Event programs have a fixed commercial deadline. Work backward from the required delivery date and include destination handling, customs clearance, freight, packing, bulk production, sample approval, artwork preparation and quotation. Add decision time for sponsor review. A supplier cannot recover weeks lost to artwork approval by simply compressing every production stage.
- Confirm quantity, delivery address and in-hand date.
- Freeze the towel construction and decoration route.
- Submit print-ready artwork and color references.
- Approve the decorated sample and packaging proof.
- Release the deposit and bulk production authorization.
- Book inspection and transport against the agreed milestone plan.

10. Inspect functional and presentation points
Final inspection should check the approved specification, not a generic list. Relevant points can include dimensions, weight, shade, stains, weaving or knitting defects, hem quality, loose threads, embroidery appearance, logo position, grommet reinforcement, clip assembly, labeling, individual packing and carton assortment.
If testing is required, define the method and acceptance criteria before production. Depending on the program, checks may include absorbency, color fastness, shrinkage, GSM, seam or attachment strength and harmful substances. A report should identify the tested sample and result; a general statement that testing is available is not enough.
11. Compare quotations with an inclusion checklist
Ask suppliers to separate the towel, decoration, hardware, labels, packaging, tooling, sample cost, testing and freight term. Confirm whether clip assembly is included. Compare the same quantity and color breakdown. A unit price that excludes hardware or individual packing is not comparable with an all-in finished price.
